Contact karst geomorphological and speleological features in Slavina corrosional plain, Slovenia

The Data include shapefiles from geomorphological mapping and speleological fieldwork as a part of research conducted in the contact karst of the Slavina Corrosional Plain, south of Postojna Basin, western Slovenia, between 2019 and 2023.

The data includes shapefiles of:

• blind valleys – Biščevci, Sajevško Polje and Ivačevci blind valleys (polygons of slope with rim, and active and karstified bottom of surface geomorphic features),

• unroofed caves – Loza unroofed cave (polygons of slope with rim and bottom of the surface geomorphic features),

• caves – Markov spodmol and Vodna jama v Lozi cave (polygon shapefile of the cave plan, obtained from the Cave Register of Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU)

• study sites – site numbers of chronological sediment analyses within the Loza Cave System (points shapefile of locations of sampled flowstone and allogenic sediments).

Some geomorphological research was published by Švara et al. 2022 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.3986/ac.v51i2.10788), whereas the chronological research has been prepared for submission.

The research was financed by the Young Researchers Programme of the Slovenian Research Agency (ARRS). It was also partly founded by the Slovenian Research Agency [core funding No. P6-0119]. The drone photographic material was recognized by the project »DEVELOPMENT OF RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIVENESS OF THE SLOVENIAN RRI SPACE – RI-SI-EPOS«. The operation was co-financed by the Republic of Slovenia, the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport, and the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund. Chronological results are mostly thanks to the collaboration of the Karst Research Institute of Research Centre of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts in Postojna with the Institute of Geology, Czech Academy of Science in Prague (institutional financing No. RVO6798531, MOBILITY PLUS projects SAZU-19-01, SAZU-22-08 and SAZU-24-04) and other contributions.

IZRK Metadata Portal
The IZRK Metadata Portal was developed at the Data Centre of the Karst Research Institute ZRC SAZU from 2021 to 2022 using the GeoNetwork platform to build a system management and user interface for multidisciplinary environmental data mining and access to data products. The architecture of the new metadata portal is compliant with FAIR data principles and data lifecycle, and is collecting and mapping various datasets, databases, research sites and instruments, virtual laboratories, workflows, and codes. The portal offers data for multidisciplinary KARST database and for multidisciplinary research that covers all domains and functionalities of a karst landscape. Moreover, the portal is designed to provide a temporal and spatial link between specific sites and their data as part of three main projects:
  • RI-SI-LifeWatch (2019 - 2021)
  • RI-SI-EPOS (2019 - 2021)
  • eLTER RI (2020 - 2025)
